Presidency rejects claim that PDP left healthy economy

The Presidency yesterday dismissed former President Goodluck Jonathan’s claim on the state of the economy at the end of his administration in May 2015.

Jonathan said at the weekend that he handed over a healthy economy to President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We tamed inflation at a single digit, maintained price stability, and drove the economy to become the largest in Africa”, the ex-president explained.

But the Presidency disagreed, saying the economy President Buhari inherited had crumbled.... more

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has received knocks for praising his administration after  admitting that he “failed to completely plug the loopholes in the fight against corruption”.

Jonathan, who spoke in Abuja at the convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said his administration “did well”. He explained that he “learnt that some people said that if the PDP had remained in power beyond 2015, the economy would have been worse”. “This couldn’t have been the case, because we had a sound economic team in place,” the former president said.... more

Some people suspected to be gunmen yesterday shot dead a policeman and a civilian near Assemblies of God (AG) Church on Oguta Road at Onitsha in Anambra State.

An eyewitness said the gunmen stopped near the church, adding that on sighting some policemen nearby, they opened fire on them.

The source also said the attackers took away the rifle of the slain policeman.

ABout 10,000 youths from oil-bearing communities in Niger Delta will be engaged by the Federal Government as surveillance and security officers at oil pipelines in the region.

Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Chairman, Presidential Amnesty Programme Brig. Gen. Paul Boroh announced this at a news conference in Abuja, yesterday.

He said:  “The Presidential Amnesty Programme is responsible for interacting with nine state governments, including Ondo State, and we  aware of what is happening there. THE Osun State government has explained how it disbursed the second tranche of its Paris Club loan refund it received from the Federal Government.

Addressing reporters yesterday at his office in Osogbo, the state capital, Information Commissioner Adelani Baderinwa said N5,131,680,567.59 was expended on full salaries and pensions up till last month (July) for Levels 1 to 7 workers, being the most vulnerable, “the balance of the full salaries for the remaining workers up till August 2015, and balance of 2015 leave bonus”.

The state government, in agreement with labour unions in the state, agreed to use the second tranche of the Paris Club loan refund for the payment of salaries and pensions.... more

Anambra State Governor Willy Obiano yesterday described  Sunday’s  killings at  St. Philips Catholic Church, Amakwa, Ozubulu during Mass as a gang war that spilled to the state from an African country.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and Obiano vowed yesterday that the perpetrators of the crime would not go unpunished.

Obiano upgraded the death toll to 12 from the 11 announced by the police on Sunday.

The governor gave an insight into the killings in a broadcast to the people.

The Federal Government on Tuesday at the  Federal High Court sitting in Lagos filed an application seeking to withdraw its suit against seven banks accused of violating the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the seven banks are Diamond Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA), First Bank, Skye Bank, Fidelity Bank, Sterling Bank and the defunct Keystone Bank (now Heritage Bank).

The Federal Government had alleged that the banks connived with some government agencies to illegally conceal 793.2 million dollars meant to have been transferred to the TSA domiciled in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The government had in the suit alleged that 367.4 milliion dollars was illegally hidden by three government agencies in UBA, while 41 million dollars was illegally kept in a NAPIMS fixed deposit account with Skye Bank.... more

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned that Nigeria’s fragile growth risks falling back into recession.

Addressing reporters at the end of the bi-monthly Monetary Policy Committee Meeting in Abuja yesterday, CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele said “forecasts of key macroeconomic indicators point to a fragile economic recovery in the second quarter of the year”.

”The Committee  cautioned that this recovery could relapse in a more protracted recession if strong and bold monetary and fiscal policies are not activated immediately to sustain it,” he stressed.... more

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha yesterday dismissed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as no threat to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“PDP is a non issue; we don’t even care about that. We defeated them when they were in power, so what is different when we are now in power?”

Okorocha, who is also APC Governors Forum Chairman, spoke after he led his colleagues to a meeting with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari’s medical vacation is not stopping the ruling party from holding its convention.... more
